THE CIRCASSIANS

The Circassians were forced to emigrate to Turkey following the Russian conquest of the Caucasus region in the XIXth century, likewise the Tartars endured a diaspora because of their religion (predominantly Sunni Muslims). 3 to 4 million people is living outside their homeland, out of which 2 million live in Turkey. They still mainly speak the Circassian language. SHAME is the worst insult you can say to a Circassian. Weddings are forbidden between siblings and cousins and most of the time within the ethnic group. Traditional dances are often accompanied by moanings and accordeons.
